Helicopter
Instrument Rating (currently available under Part 61)
The Helicopter Flight Instructor Certificate allows
the pilot to instruct others in the art and skill
of flying a helicopter. The Certified Flight Instructor
(CFI) is authorized to teach both aspiring private
and commercial pilots. It requires considerable knowledge
and the ability to properly teach a subject and fulfill
the responsibilities of this most important position.

Pilot Certificate with an aircraft category and
class rating that applies to the instrument rating

Minimum requirements for a Flight Instructor Certificate
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be able to read, write, and converse fluently in English.
- Hold a commercial or airline transport pilot (ATP) certificate
with an aircraft rating appropriate to the flight instructor
rating sought (e.g., helicopter or airplane).

- Fundamentals of Instructing
- Flight Instructor Flight Maneuvers
- All other subject areas in which ground training
is required for recreational, private, and commercial

tests with scores of 70% or better. You are not required
to take the FOI knowledge test if you:

- Hold a current teacher's certificate authorizing you

- The flight instruction must be given by a person who has
held a flight instructor certificate during the 24 months
immediately preceding the date the instruction is given
and who has given at least 200 hr. of flight instruction
as a CFI.
Fixed Wing (Airplane) Pilots are eligible to add Rotorcraft
ratings to their existing certificates. Fortunately, they
are not required to take an additional knowledge test for
the additional ratings they want to obtain. With this in mind,
the add-on rating usually will cost less than an initial rating
due to a reduction in the minimum total flight hours and ground
school preparation. Pricing for the Add-On rating will vary
from pilot to pilot due to skill level and time commitment.
All of our times are average times for completion of the rating,
but are not guaranteed. Some individuals may take more time,
some may take less time.
